Nursing school tuition

New York (MedscapeWire) Jan 23 — Pittsburgh's Ohio Valley General Hospital (OVGH) School of Nursing is giving all incoming nursing school students free tuition (a $16,500 value), plus a job when they graduate. This effort, says OVGH president Bill Provenzano, is in response to a national nursing shortage and the hospital's commitment to maintaining a high quality medical staff.

"Nursing is a rewarding, but tough job. Our nursing students must be committed to a rigorous training and educational program. That's why it's important for us to compete for the best students who will then become part of a Hospital that is nationally recognized," said Provenzano.

The OVGH School of Nursing is able to offer the free tuition as a result of community donations to the Josephine Roseta Educational Fund. "Our good standing in the community, I think, is the reason the Josephine Roseta Educational Fund receives the many generous donations that make this nurse recruitment effort possible," said Provenzano.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) again ranked Pittsburgh's Ohio Valley General Hospital as among the best in the country. Its School of Nursing is a key resource for qualified personnel and Provenzano was gratified that the community the Hospital serves is a vital part of this recruitment effort.

Some of the other city hospitals are also responding to a reported national nursing shortage with their own offers to new students and existing nurses. According to School of Nursing Chair Gaye Falletta, all the good hospitals are looking to fill their nursing schools with the best students.

"It's no secret why our medical staff scores extremely high in the JCAHO reviews," continued Provenzano. "We hire good people. And we want to hire the best students from a good nursing school. What better school than our own?"
